La storia del Premio GEM
Gloria Trevisan e Marco Gottardi, due brillanti giovani architetti italiani, si erano traferiti a Londra agli inizi del 2017 in cerca di esperienze lavorative. Erano felici di aver trovato un bell’appartamento, per un prezzo ragionevole, al ventitreesimo piano della Grenfell Tower.
Poco tempo prima del rogo Gloria aveva cominciato a lavorare presso il nostro studio, Peregrine Bryant Architecture and Conservation, e subito eravamo stati colpiti dalla sue capacita’ lavorative e la sua naturale gentilezza.
L’intero studio è rimasto scioccato dalla sua morte e da quella del suo fidanzato Marco e abbiamo tutti pianto la prematura perdita delle loro giovani vite, le cui capacita’ professionali facevano prefigurare un brillante futuro.
Dopo questo terribile orrore, noi, con molti altri, desideriamo far germogliare da tanto dolore un seme che possa produrre del bene. Con il supporto dei genitori e degli amici di Gloria e Marco stiamo istituendo una borsa di studio alla loro memoria, un premio annuale che aiuterà un giovane laureato italiano interessato in conservazione, come lo erano loro, a viaggiare nel Regno Unito per una esperienza lavorativa e di studio.
La Borsa
Il nostro scopo è di accumulare una somma sufficiente per finanziare una borsa annuale di £7500. Per garantire questo dovremo raggiungere una somma totale di circa £250.000. Questa borsa provvederà al finanziamento del trasporto e dell’ alloggio nel Regno Unito insieme a:
- Un’esperienza lavorativa in studi di architettura e ingegneria nell’ambito della conservazione.
- Visite a cantieri con funzionari di Historic England e altre organizzazioni per seguire il loro lavoro di supervisione
- Partecipazione al corso per la salvaguardia del patrimonio storico tenuto da RICS and SPAB ogni anno in Ottobre.
Se riusciremo, come speriamo, a raccogliere più fondi pensiamo di provvedere per una seconda borsa di studio o organizzare una reciproca borsa che permetterà ad un giovane laureato inglese di viaggiare e studiare in Italia.
La borsa in memoria di di Gloria Trevisan e Marco Gottardi e’ sostenuta dagli altri studi dove Gloria e Marco hanno lavorato durante la loro breve permanenza nel Regno Unito, dalle loro famiglie e amici, dall’ Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia, dove Gloria e Marco hanno studiato, dalla SPAB, con ognuno dei quali sta contribuendo allo sviluppo di questa borsa di studio.
Il nostro obbiettivo e’ di offrire quest’anno la prima borsa ad un laureato dell’Istituto universitario di Venezia.
Le domande saranno raccolte questa primavera con l’obbiettivo di finalizzare la selezione durante l’Estate e avere il pri-mo vincitore della borsa pronto ad arrivare nel Regno Unito in Settembre per rimanere per un periodo di 3 mesi fino a fine Novembre.
Questa borsa creerà l’opportunità per un laureato di eccellenza in restauro architettonico di ampliare la propria esperienza e rimarrà a testimoniare le vite e le abilità di Gloria Trevisan e Marco Gottardi cosi tragicamente perdute nella notte del 14 giugno del 2017.
History of the GeM Award
In 2017, Gloria Trevisan and her fiancé Marco Gottardi, young and talented graduate architects from Italy, came to London to find work and were delighted when they found an affordable flat on the 23rd floor of the Grenfell Tower.
Peregrine Bryant Architects Ltd had, shortly before the fire, offered a job to Gloria and she had started work with them. The practice was naturally devastated by her death and that of Marco and we mourned the loss of two fine young people whose work was indeed full of promise.
But out of the grim horror of the disaster, we and many others were keen to bring to fruition some small good and to this end established a memorial fund in their name to provide an annual award to help talented young Italian graduates, interested in conservation, as they were, to come to the U.K. to study and work.
The scholarship
Our aim is to raise a sufficient sum to fund an annual award of £7,500. For this we need to raise in the order of £250,000. The award will provide:
- financial support for travel and accommodation costs and provide work experience in both architectural and structural engineering conservation practices as well as spending time with Historic England, an internship with the National Trust, The Landmark Trust and other bodies involved in the conservation of historic buildings in the UK.
- Attendance at relevant conservation courses including the RICS Conservation Course and the SPAB Historic Buildings Repairs Course.
Our goal is to offer the first scholarship this year to a graduate of the University IUAV of Venice.
If, as we hope, we are able to raise more funding, we will either provide an additional award or, alternatively, set up a reciprocal award to help young UK conservation graduates to visit and study in Italy.
Applications will be collected this Spring with the aim of finalising the selection during the Summer and having the first scholarship winner ready to arrive in the UK in September to stay for a period of 3 months until the end of November.
The scholarship in memory of di Gloria Trevisan and Marco Gottardi is supported by the other studios where Gloria and Marco worked during their short stay in the United Kingdom, by their families and friends, by the University of Architecture of Venice, where Gloria and Marco have studied, from SPAB, with each of which he is contributing to the development of this scholarship.
This scholarship will create the opportunity for an excellent graduate in architectural restoration to broaden their experience and will remain to witness the lives and skills of Gloria Trevisan and Marco Gottardi so tragically lost on the night of June 14, 2017.
