Dove storia e contemporaneità leggono insieme i segni dei tempi
Nel cuore di Venezia, a pochi passi da Piazza San Marco, sorge uno dei più interessanti complessi culturali della città lagunare: Palazzo Querini Stampalia, sede dell’omonima Fondazione voluta nel 1868 dal conte Giovanni Querini Stampalia, colto e filantropo, che moriva l’anno successivo senza eredi diretti.
Il Palazzo, che custodisce le preziose collezioni d’arte dell’antica famiglia patrizia, ulteriormente arricchite nel corso degli ultimi 150 anni da lasciti e acquisizioni, è stato oggetto d’intervento di importanti architetti contemporanei: Carlo Scarpa, Mario Botta, Valeriano Pastor, Michele De Lucchi.
Luogo di molti luoghi, si leggono nella sua storia, nelle sue architetture, nella varietà delle sue attività, la Querini Stampalia si propone come campo di produzione culturale basata sullo studio e la valorizzazione del proprio patrimonio storico e museale e sulla riflessione attenta a cogliere le proposte più avanzate della contemporaneità.

Curatori determineranno, ma costantemente in tutti quei giorni, ed ore in cui le Biblioteche pubbliche sono chiuse, e la sera specialmente per comodo degli studiosi, che saranno collocati non nella Biblioteca, ma in una Sala vicina, bella, comoda, con stufe, e tappeti per l’inverno. – Vi saranno camere per adunanze serali di dotti e scienziati, sì nazionali, che forestieri…
Una terza parte almeno della mia rendita annua verrà impiegata in questa gratuita Istituzione del Gabinetto di lettura, ed adunanze serali di dotti ed amici del sapere, che manca ora in questa Città, e che credo atta a promuovere il culto dei buoni studj, e delle utili discipline, scopo principale della fondazione Querini…

Where History and Contemporaneity Read Together the Signs of the Times
In the heart of Venice, close to Piazza San Marco, there is one of the more interesting cultural institutions of the city: situated in Palazzo Querini Stampalia, once home to the Querini Stampalia family. The Foundation was established in 1868 through a remarkable Testament left by Count Giovanni Querini Stampalia, a well-read philanthropist who died without heirs.
The Palazzo contains the prestigious cultural acquisitions of the family, and has been further improved during the last 150 years through more bequests and acquisitions. It has also seen interventions by important contemporary architects including Carlo Scarpa, Mario Botta, Valeriano Pastor and Michele De Lucchi.
A place of many places. One can read in its history, in its architecture, in the variety of its activities that the Querini Stampalia is a thriving cultural centre rooted not only in the study and enhancement of its own historical heritage and museum collection but is also an arena for careful reflections which seize the most innovative contemporary proposals of the day.
From the Will of Count Giovanni Querini Stampalia, son of Alvise, written in Venice on 11 December, 1868 and published the day of his death by the testator on 25 May, 1869:
….My Library, Gallery, collections of Medals, Art objects host in my Palace in S.Zaccaria will be designated to a public use. – In addition, there will be a reading room on the first floor of my palace in the rooms I live in. – The reading room and the Library will remain open during the days and times that … according to the will of the curators, but always during all those days and times the public Libraries are closed, especially at night.
For the scholars there will be placed, not in the library, but in a near beautiful and comfortable room, heaters and carpets for the winter. – There will be room for evening meetings between national and international scholars and scientists … At least a third part of my annual income will be used for this free library foundation and for the evening meetings among scholars and friends of knowledge who are not present in this city.
The main goal of Fondazione Querini will be to promote devotion to the culture of good studies and useful disciplines…
